Inconel 718 is the highest grade in a class of superalloy metals, renowned for its exceptional resistance to oxidation, corrosion, and extreme temperatures.
This high-grade nickel-chromium-based alloy is reserved for use in extreme applications such as spacecraft, where performance under severe conditions is critical. In fact, the Space Shuttle was secured to the launch platform by just eight Inconel studs.
Inconel 718 maintains its impressive strength and structural integrity across a wide temperature range, from cryogenic levels to over 1,300°C (2,370°F). Its high nickel content ensures outstanding resistance to oxidation and corrosion, even in highly acidic environments.
The production of Inconel 718 is complex and costly, reflecting its high performance and reliability in the most extreme engineering scenarios where failure is not an option. Even simple components, such as bolts made from this superalloy, can cost over $100 each due to the expensive production process.
